Borrowed from German Zimmer (a room), Middle High German zimber, from Old High German zimbar, from Proto-Germanic *timrą, from Proto-Indo-European *dem- (build, house) (see Proto-Indo-European *dṓm). Cognate with English timber and Dutch timmer (building; construction; room).
