Etymology[edit]
Probably from Parthian, from Old Iranian; composed of *upa- (“on, to”) + *sta- (“stand, stay, remain”). Compare Manichaean Middle Persian ʾbyst (abest, “place of refuge”), Old Armenian ապաստան (apastan, “shelter, refuge”).
