Borrowed from Classical Persian اِصْفَهَان (isfahān), from earlier سِپَاهَان (sipāhān), from Middle Persian, ultimately from Old Persian *spādānah (army) or *spādānām (of the armies), from 𐎿𐎱𐎠𐎭 (s-p-a-d /⁠spādaʰ⁠/, army), from Proto-Iranian *cwáHdaH (army).
