Etymology[edit]
From اَلْ (al-) + أَبْنَاء (ʔabnāʔ), plural of اِبْن (ibn, “son”).
The second sense may be a short form of the phrase أَبْنَاء الْدَوْلَة (ʔabnāʔ al-dawla, literally “sons of the state, i.e. the Abbasid Caliphate”).
