From Old Anatolian Turkish, being a compound of امام (imam) +‎ Old Anatolian Turkish قلی (the possessed form of قل (slave)), literally slave of the Imam; compare Azerbaijani İmamqulu, Chagatai امام‌قلی, Turkish İmamkulu.
