  1. (intransitive) to be moved, to tremble, to quiver, to writhe
    • 609–632 CE, Qur'an, 27:10:
      وَأَلْقِ عَصَاكَ فَلَمَّا رَءَاهَا تَهْتَزُّ كَأَنَّهَا جَانٌّ وَلَّى مُدْبِرًا وَلَمْ يُعَقِّبْ
      waʔalqi ʕaṣāka falammā raʔāhā tahtazzu kaʔannahā jānnun wallā mudbiran walam yuʕaqqib
      And [he was told]: “Throw down your staff.” But when he saw it writhing as if it were a snake, he turned in flight and did not return.
  2. (intransitive, figuratively) (of plants) to develop, to grow longer or higher
    • 609–632 CE, Qur'an, 22:5:
      وَتَرَى ٱلْأَرْضَ هَامِدَةً فَإِذَا أَنْزَلْنَا عَلَيْهَا ٱلْمَاءَ ٱهْتَزَّتْ وَرَبَتْ وَأَنْبَتَتْ مِنْ كُلِّ زَوْجٍ بَهِيجٍ
      watarā l-ʔarḍa hāmidatan faʔiḏā ʔanzalnā ʕalayhā l-māʔa htazzat warabat waʔanbatat min kulli zawjin bahījin
      And you see the earth barren, but when We send down upon it rain, it quivers and swells and grows [something] of every beautiful kind.
