From Proto-Pathan *uwd < *úwd, from an ancestral Middle Iranian form *uβdá,[1] from Proto-Iranian *huftáh, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *suptás, from Proto-Indo-European *sup-tó-s, from *swep- (“to sleep”).
