Persian[edit]

Etymology[edit]

From Middle Persian ʾpwš (apōš), from Avestan 𐬀𐬞𐬀𐬋𐬱𐬀 (apaōša), derived from Proto-Iranian *apauša (unthriving).

Earlier interpretations included Proto-Iranian *apa-uša (burning away), however for phonetical reasons this is impossible. Traditional folk etymology in the Dādestān ī Dēnīg interpreted it as āb (water) + ōš (destruction), "(having) the destruction of water".
