Arabic[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Ultimately from Sanskrit ब्राह्मण (brā́hmaṇa). In a pseudo-etymology by Muslim scholars, it was said to come from the same root as إِبْرَاهِيم (ʔibrāhīm) in order to indicate an Abrahamic origin for Vedantic monotheism and to categorise Hindus as 'People of the Book'.
