تَبَرَّأَ (tabarraʔa) V, non-past يَتَبَرَّأُ‎ (yatabarraʔu)

  1. to declare oneself innocent (+مِنْ (min))
  2. to disown, to renounce, to disavow (+مِنْ (min))
    • 609–632 CE, Qur'an, 2:167:
      وَقَالَ الَّذِينَ ٱتَّبَعُوا لَوْ أَنَّ لَنَا كَرَّةً فَنَتَبَرَّأَ مِنْهُمْ كَمَا تَبَرَّءُوا مِنَّا
      waqāla allaḏīna ttabaʕū law ʔanna lanā karratan fanatabarraʔa minhum kamā tabarraʔū minnā
      And those who were but followers will say: If a return were possible for us, we would disown them even as they have disowned us.
