Persian[edit]

Etymology[edit]

From the verb تَنبَسیدَن (tanbasidan, to twist threads), from Proto-Indo-European *temp- (to span, stretch, extend) whence also Persian تافتن (tâftan, to twist; to twine), تابیدن (tâbidan, to twist, turn, spin).
Compare Arabic طِنْفَسَة (ṭinfasa), borrowed from Persian or Middle Iranian, and Ancient Greek τᾰ́πης (tápēs) (which may be a borrowing from Old Iranian), whence Latin tapēte (see there for further descendants).
