Etymology[edit]

From the root ح و ي (ḥ-w-y), meaning "to wrap around", "to wiggle or twist", "to writhe", "to coil", "to circle around a location", "to draw or gather together"; related to the root ح ي و (ḥ-y-w), meaning "a living space or enclosure", "a surrounding or vicinity", "a collection of tents circling around a campsite". Cognate with Aramaic חויא (ḥiwyā), Classical Syriac ܚܘܝܐ (ḥewyā).
