Inherited from Sauraseni Prakrit *𑀭𑁄𑀓𑁆𑀓 (*rokka) + Middle Indo-Aryan -𑀟- (-ḍa-),[1] from Sanskrit रोक (roka, buying with ready money). Cognate with Punjabi ਰੋਕੜ (rokaṛ) / روکَڑ (rokaṛ), Sindhi روڪَڙِ / रोकड़ि, Gujarati રોકડ (rokaḍ), Marathi रोकड (rokaḍ).
