Etymology[edit]

Since, often, calamar on a plate or in its natural habitat appears white, it is probably the same word as سِبِيدَاج (sibīdāj, white lead). Compare the repurposing of كَرْكَنْد (karkand, ruby spinel) for “lobster”.
