Etymology[edit]

In respect of the age of the name, the derivation is not set in stone, but one thinks of سُوق (sūq, market) +‎ قَطْرَة (qaṭra, drop), respectively a corresponding Old South Arabian or Modern South Arabian combination, due to the trading port basing its economy around the plantation of aloe, dragon blood trees, frankincense and such resins.
