Etymology[edit]
By surface analysis, سلسله (selsele) + مراتب (marâteb).
Compare Arabic سِلْسِلَةُ مَراتِب (silsilatu marātib, “hierarchy”), Ottoman Turkish سلسله مراتب (silsile-i meratib, “hierarchy”), which is now replaced in modern Turkish by hiyerarşi.
