Persian[edit]

Etymology[edit]

By surface analysis, سلسله (selsele) +‎ مراتب (marâteb).

Compare Arabic سِلْسِلَةُ مَراتِب (⁧silsilatu marātib, hierarchy), Ottoman Turkish سلسله مراتب (silsile-i meratib, hierarchy), which is now replaced in modern Turkish by hiyerarşi. (This etymology is missing or incomplete. Please add to it, or discuss it at the Etymology scriptorium. Particularly: “Likely an Ottoman Arabic-based coinage used for translating European terms”)
