Moroccan Arabic[edit]

Etymology[edit]

From Arabic عَلَى ٱلرِّيقِ (ʕala r-rīqi, on an empty stomach). Equivalent to على (ʕla, on) +‎ الريق (er-rīq, the saliva), literally on the saliva. Compare Maltese għar-riq and Egyptian Arabic عالرايق (ʕar-rāyeʔ).
