The noun عَلَف (ʕalaf, fodder) is the most-frequent word of this root and, apparently its singular origin, hails from a form within the root ء ل ف (ʔ-l-f) such as أَلِفَ (ʔalifa, to start to like said about animals near their nourishment) etc. as quoted there.
