Inherited from Proto-Turkic *kočaq (hero, brave man); equivalent to قوچ (koç, ram; brave man) +‎ ـاق (-ak, noun and adjective diminutive suffix). Cognate with Azerbaijani qoçaq, Karakalpak қошшақ, Kumyk къоччакъ (qoççaq) and Turkmen goçak.
