Etymology[edit]

Borrowed from Ottoman Turkish كرپیچ (kerpiç, unbaked brick) comparing the raw states of bricks and this pastry, in the form كَرْبِيج (karbīj), then using كَرَابِيج (karābīj) as a pluraletantum, then back-forming كَرْبُوجَة (karbūja), كَرْبُوج (karbūj).
