Etymology[edit]
Calque of Hindi नई दिल्ली (naī dillī), equivalent to نئی (naī, “new”) + دہلی (dihlī, “Delhi”). Compare Punjabi نَوِیْں دِلّی (nauiīṉ dillī) / Punjabi ਨਵੀਂ ਦਿੱਲੀ (navī̃ dillī).
