Arabic[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Probably from Old Persian 𐏃𐎡𐎯𐎢𐏁 (hinduš), from Sanskrit सिन्धु (síndhu, river, the Indus), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *sindʰuš (river).

This etymology is missing or incomplete. Please add to it, or discuss it at the Etymology scriptorium.
Particularly: “Are there such early attestations? We should rule out that it's simply from English "Hindus" and/or influenced by مَجُوس (majūs). The Arabs did have contact with Hinduism of course, but that doesn't mean they necessarily had this word.”

Noun[edit]

هِنْدُوس (hindūsm pl (collective, singulative هِنْدُوسِيّ m (hindūsiyy))

  1. (collective) Hindus
