Etymology[edit]

From Arabic بَبَغَاء (babaḡāʔ, parrot), probably a word of onomatopoeic origin. Compare Classical Syriac ܒܒܓܐ (/⁠babbaggā⁠/), Old Armenian պապկայ (papkay) and Persian ببغا (babğâ).
