Etymology[edit]

Compare the Hebrew גֶּזַע (gézaʿ, “trunk”) and the Arabic جِذْع (jiḏʕ, “trunk”). The sense of "grammatical stem" is a calque of Arabic أَصْل (ʔaṣl).
