Etymology[edit]

From Aramaic חַמְשַׁעֵסְרֶא (ḥaməšaʿesrē). Equivalent to ܚܲܡܸܫ (ḥamiš, “five”) +‎ ܥܸܣܲܪ (ʿisar, “ten”); compare Arabic خَمْسَ عَشْرَةَ (ḵamsa ʕašrata) and Hebrew חֲמֵשׁ עֶשְׂרֵה (khamésh 'esré).
