Etymology[edit]

From Aramaic חַמְשַׁעֵסְרֶא (ḥaməšaʿesrē). Equivalent to ܚܲܡܸܫ (ḥamiš, five) +‎ ܥܸܣܲܪ (ʿisar, ten); compare Arabic خَمْسَ عَشْرَةَ (ḵamsa ʕašrata) and Hebrew חֲמֵשׁ עֶשְׂרֵה (khamésh 'esré).
