From Manichaean Parthian [Manichaean needed] (sfsyr /safsēr/, “sword”). Compare Middle Persian šmšyl (šamšēr) / špšyl (šafšēr, “sword”), Persian شمشیر (šamšir), and Ancient Greek σαμψήρα (sampsḗra, “foreign sword”).
