From Aramaic פְּתִי (pəṯī, “to enlarge, open wide”), from Proto-West Semitic *pataw- (“to spread; to seduce, beguile”), from a biconsonantal root extended by reduplication in Proto-West Semitic *patat- (“to make disintegrate, to cut piecemeal”) and also seen in Proto-Semitic *pataḥ- (“to open”); cognate to Arabic فَتِيَ (fatiya, “to be youthful”) and Hebrew פִּתָּה (pitá, “to entice, seduce”).
