Inherited from Prakrit 𑀤𑀸𑀲 (dāsa, “knowing man”). Cognate with Sindhi ڏاھو (ḍ̠āho, “wise, clever”) and Gujarati ડાહ્યું (ḍāhyũ, “sane, reasonable”).
