Etymology[edit]
Inherited from Prakrit *𑀭𑀝𑁆𑀞𑀯𑀸𑀲𑀺𑀁 (*raṭṭhavāsiṃ) (compare Pali raṭṭhavāsin), from Sanskrit राष्ट्रवासिन् (rāṣṭravāsin); equivalent to ރަށް (raṣ̊, “country”) + ވެހި (vehi, “dweller”). Doublet of ރަށްވެހި (raṣ̊vehi, “friend, countryman”), a new formation from the same elements; cognate to Sinhalese රටවැසි (raṭawæsi). .
