Inherited from Prakrit *𑀅𑀧𑀸𑀳𑀚 (*apāhaja) losing the nasalisation in an earlier *𑀅𑀧𑀸𑀳𑀁𑀚 (*apāhaṃja), from Sanskrit अप- (apa-) +‎ (ā) +‎ *भञ्ज (bhañja), from the root भञ्ज् (bhañj, to break).
