Inherited from Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀓𑀓𑁆𑀓𑀟 (kakkaḍa) + Middle Indo-Aryan -𑀓- (-ka-), from Sanskrit कर्कट (karkaṭa, “crab”), with the word structure and semantic domain suggested borrowing from a substrate language; compare Santali ᱠᱟᱴᱠᱚᱢ (kaṭkôm, “crab”).[1]
