Inherited from Maharastri Prakrit 𑀡𑀻𑀮 (ṇīla), from Sanskrit नील (nī́la). Compare Konkani नीळो (nīḷô), Gujarati નીલું (nīlũ), Hindi नीला (nīlā), Sindhi نِيرو / नीरो (nīro), Punjabi ਨੀਲਾ (nīlā) / نیلا (nelā), Bengali নীল (nil), Assamese নীলা (nila), Sinhalese නිල් (nil), Dhivehi ނޫ (nū).
