Etymology[edit]

Borrowed from Classical Persian نثار (nisār), from Arabic نِثَار (niṯār, scattering, dispersing), the verbal noun of نَثَرَ (naṯara, to sprinkle, to scatter, to disperse), referring to the money scattered about in a marriage or feast.
