Etymology[edit]

From the nominalisation of फोडणे (phoḍṇe). Compare Hindi तड़का (taṛkā) or Hindi छौंक (cha͠uk), Gujarati વઘાર (vaghār), Tamil தாளித்தல் (tāḷittal), Telugu తాలింపు (tālimpu).
