Inherited from Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀯𑁂𑀮𑁆𑀮𑀤𑀺 (velladi), from Sanskrit वेल्लयति (vellayati, to knead), from the root वेल्ल् (vell). Cognate with Assamese বেলা (bela).
