Hindi[edit]
Etymology[edit]
Learned borrowing from Sanskrit भोलानाथ (bholānātha). Some modern folk etymologies tie this name to भोला (bholā, “innocent”), symbolising Shiva as innocent and thus pure.

Sanskrit[edit]
Etymology[edit]
Compound of भोला (bholā) + नाथ (nātha, “guardian”). The first part is probably inherited from Proto-Indo-Aryan *bʰawras (“dawn”) (whence also Bengali ভোর (bhōr), Hindi भोर (bhor, “dawn”)), as Shiva is the husband of Ushas, goddess of dawn.
