Inherited from Old Marathi 𑘦𑘰𑘐𑘜𑘹 (māgaṇe), from Maharastri Prakrit 𑀫𑀕𑁆𑀕𑀇 (maggaï), from Sanskrit मार्गति (mārgati). Cognate with Gujarati માગવું (māgvũ), માંગવું (mā̃gvũ), Hindi माँगना (māṅgnā), Punjabi ਮੰਗਣਾ (maṅgṇā), Odia ମାଗିବା (magiba), Bengali মাঙ্গা (maṅga).
