Etymology[edit]

Borrowed from Northwestern Indo-Aryan, whence Punjabi ਮਿੱਟੀ (miṭṭī), from Prakrit, from Sanskrit मृत्तिका (mṛttikā). Doublet of माटी (māṭī) and मट्टी (maṭṭī).
