Inherited from Old Hindi लोहू (lohū), from Prakrit 𑀮𑁄𑀳𑀺𑀅 (lohia), from Sanskrit लोहित (lohita), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *Hráwdʰitas (red), ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *h₁rewdʰ- (red). Doublet of रोहू (rohū) > Sanskrit रोहित (rohita), from same Proto-Indo-European root. Cognate with Avestan 𐬭𐬀𐬊𐬌𐬜𐬌𐬙𐬀 (raoiδita), English red, Bengali রুই (rui), Assamese ৰৌ (rou), Punjabi ਲਹੂ (lahū), Kalasha ḷúi, Khowar لۓى (léei).
