Etymology[edit]

Borrowed from Classical Persian همسایه (hamsāya). By surface analysis, हम- (ham-, same) +‎ साया (sāyā, shade). Compare Punjabi ਹਮਸਾਇਆ (hamsāiā) / ہمسایہ (hmsāyh).
