Inherited from Sanskrit আৱৰ্ত (āvarta, whirlpool). Cognate with Gujarati આંટો (ā̃ṭo, twist, turn), Marathi आटा (āṭā, turn with a rope round a post, hoop, ring, frame of an umbrella), Sinhalese අවට (awaṭa, circular surrounding), Pali āvaṭṭa (turning, circuit, eddy).
