Bengali[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Inherited from Sanskrit পদ (pada, step, foot, position), from Proto-Indo-Aryan *padám, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *padám, from Proto-Indo-European *pedóm, originally meaning 'trace, bottom', from *ped- (step, footprint). Cognate with Ancient Greek ποδός (podós) (whence English -pod), Latin pedis (whence English -ped) and Old English fōt (whence English foot). Doublet of পা (pa, foot).
