Inherited from Early Assamese বৰিষ্ (boriṣ), from Sanskrit ৱৰ্ষতি (varṣati), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *Hwáršati, from Proto-Indo-European *h₁wers-. Cognate with Odia ବରସ୍ (bôrôs), Hindustani برس / बरस (baras).
