Inherited from Prakrit *𑀫𑀺𑀝𑁆𑀝𑀇 (*miṭṭaï), verbalized from 𑀫𑀺𑀝𑁆𑀝 (miṭṭa), deaspirated from earlier 𑀫𑀺𑀝𑁆𑀞 (miṭṭha), from Sanskrit मिष्ट (miṣṭa), from earlier मृष्ट (mṛṣṭa, wiped, polished), with semantic shift. Doublet of মাজা (maja, to scrub, wipe), মাখা (makha, to smear, mix), মাখন (makhon, butter), মিষ্টি (miśṭi, sweet), and মিঠা (miṭha, sweet) (see there for more).
