Inherited from Sanskrit हायि (hāyi, exclamation in musical chants). Cognate with Odia ହାୟ୍ (hay)‌, Hindi हाय (hāy)‌, Punjabi ਹਾਏ (hāē), Gujarati હાય (hāya), Marathi हाय (hāy).
