Inherited from Old Punjabi ਘਰੁ (gharu), from Prakrit 𑀖𑀭 (ghara), from Ashokan Prakrit *𑀕𑀭𑁆𑀳 (*garha), from a metathesized form of Sanskrit गृह (gṛhá).
