Etymology[edit]
Learned borrowing from Sanskrit इलीश (ilīśa), इलीष (ilīṣa), a compound of इल् (il, “to go, move”) + ईश (īśa, “lord, master, chief”), literally meaning "the chief of those which move (in water)", referring to the perceived taste of the fish.
