Etymology[edit]

From a feminine form of Sauraseni Prakrit *𑀳𑁄𑀟 (*hoḍa), from Sanskrit होड (hoḍa), from a Dravidian language (compare Kannada ಓಡ (ōḍa, boat) with voiced retroflex), from Proto-Dravidian *cōṭam (boat), from *cōṭ- (to run).[1][2] Compare Hindi होड़ी (hoṛī), Marathi होडी (hoḍī), Dhivehi އޮޑި (oḍi).
