From Proto-Tai *koːŋᴬ (to heap up). Cognate with Lao ກອງ (kǭng), ᦂᦸᧂ (k̇oang), Tai Nüa ᥐᥩᥒ (koang), Tai Dam ꪀꪮꪉ, Shan ၵွင် (kǎung), Zhuang gong.
