From Old Khmer ចង្រៃ (caṅrai, evil omen; bad luck; misfortune; etc) or Pre-Angkorian Old Khmer ចំរៃ (caṃrai, idem). Cognate with Modern Khmer ចង្រៃ (cɑngrɨy).
